* HOBBIES: Reading and cooking.
* OTHER INTERESTS: Spending time with my kids, watching movies, football, listening to music and surfing the internet.
* STARTED TRAINING IN: 1987.
* REASON FOR STARTING TRAINING: Because I was too skinny! I weighed 140 pounds at my height and set out to double my bodyweight in five years.
* EFFECTS TRAINING HAS HAD ON YOUR LIFE: Made me more confident and disciplined. I am now more aware of my body and my nutritional needs.
* WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT COMPETING?: Getting on stage and entertaining people.
* WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE MOST ABOUT COMPETING?: Dieting and travelling whilst depleted of food.
* ROLE MODELS/INSPIRATION: Mohammed Ali, I met him in 1980 whilst I was a school boy and he has remained my one and only role model.
* PHYSIQUES YOU ADMIRE: Ronnie Coleman, Lee Haney, Jay Cutler, Charlie Clairmonte.
* YOUR BEST BODYPART: My arms.
* LONG-TERM GOALS: To be a top competitor at the Olympia.
* FAVOURITE EXERCISES: Lat pulldowns and leg presses.
* LEAST-FAVOURITE EXERCISE: Bicep curls, I hate the sensation it produces.
* TRAITS YOU ADMIRE MOST IN OTHERS: Modesty and humility.
* TRAITS YOU ADMIRE MOST IN YOURSELF: Brutal honesty and my ability to ‘read' people.
* FAVOURITE WAY TO RELAX: Chilling out in a jacuzzi or watching movies with my kids.
* FAVOURITE T.V. PROGRAMME: News.
* FAVOURITE FILM: Pulp Fiction.

* TRAINING PARTNERS: Carmen Knight, IFBB figure Pro, Ricky Welling IFBB Pro and Chris Mylona, about to enter his first contest on May 5
* ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO OFFER TO ANYONE BEGINNING BODYBUILDING: Be realistic about your goals and intentions, and remember that the genetics to succeed are stored in your mind. Be patient, impatience leads to people resorting to drastic and dangerous measures that can be detrimental to one's health in the quest to achieve physical perfection.
* WHAT OTHER AVENUE OF SPORT WOULD YOU HAVE LIKED TO PURSUE IF NOT IN BODYBUILDING: I was involved in practically every sport at school. Sprinting is probably what I would have liked to pursue.
* WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON DRUG TESTING IN THE SPORT: I am against drugs and I think it would be very difficult to eradicate the problem. Consistency in the testing should be a good place to start.
* WHO HAS HELPED YOU IN YOUR CAREER: My family. They have supported me 1000% and I am eternally grateful to them.
* HOW DO YOU THINK THE ORDINARY MAN IN THE STREET VIEWS BODYBUILDING AND BODYBUILDERS:I think the average person in the street feels intimidated by our size. It is up to us to show them otherwise. All professionals should set an example by conducting themselves in a polite and professional manner.
* ANY OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE YOU WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON: "Do unto others as you would expect others to do unto you", is a phrase that governs my actions. If we all thought this way, the world would be a much better place.

Tom Platz

Thomas Steven Platz (born June 26, 1955 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma) is a retired professional bodybuilder. He is known among fans by the nickname "The Golden Eagle". He is 5' 7" (1.70 m) tall.

Tom Platz began his competitive bodybuilding career in the 1973 Mr. Adonis competition. He competed as an amateur until he won the 1978 World Amateur Championships middleweight division. In 1978 he moved to California; he arrived there with $50, a plane ticket, and a dream to win Mr. Olympia.

For the following nine years Platz competed as a pro aiming for the most prestigious bodybuilding title there is, Mr. Olympia. Though Platz never took first at the Olympia he had a string of top ten finishes, with a third position in 1981 being the best.

Platz became famous for his remarkable leg development. He developed a high intensity, high volume method of leg training, which led to his unparalleled size and definition for his time. Regardless of what was found lacking elsewhere, it is still widely claimed in bodybuilding circles that Platz holds the mark for the best legs in bodybuilding of his time and some of the best legs in bodybuilding ever. Flex readers agree: In a "best bodyparts of the 20th century" poll, Platz was deemed to have the best quads and hamstrings of all time.

Tom Platz retired from professional bodybuilding competition in 1987 and did a 'Comeback' in 1995 when he was awarded Honorary Mr. America. He still promotes the sport wholeheartedly. Tom says, "I just want to give back to the sport I love which has been really great to me."

He played the part of "Body Builder" in the 1990 film Book of Love. His character portrayed the Charles Atlas-like character from those "tired of bullies kicking sand in your face and stealing your girlfriend" type of advertisements that were in a lot of comic books during the 50's and 60's.

Tom Platz was and is one of the most sought after guest speakers in the world of bodybuilding, nutrition and general fitness. He is currently a Professor and Director of Bodybuilding Sciences at ISSA. Tom has a Masters in Fitness Science, Bachelors in Science Physiology and Nutrition from Wayne State University and Michigan State University, and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of California.

Platz now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, on the TPC golf course, and supplements his income working as a salesman at Airpark Chrysler Jeep.

Bill Pearl

William Arnold "Bill" Pearl (born October 31, 1930) is a former leading competitive American bodybuilder during the 1950s and '60s. He won many titles and awards, including winning the Mr. Universe contest several times, and became a trainer and author on the subject.

Pearl was born in Prineville, Oregon. His first major victory was in the 1953 Mr Universe contest (in which he beat out a then 23 year old Sean Connery). He actively competed until his retirement in 1971 after winning the Mr. Universe one last time, over superstars Frank Zane, Reg Park and Sergio Oliva. In all, he won the professional Mr Universe 4 times in an 18 year span, which was unprecedented at the time.

He was the first professional bodybuilder to author bodybuilding training courses/booklets. He is also the first to pose to music, and was especially noted in performing exhibitions doing an entire posing routine of Eugene Sandow (who is known as the man who started the sport of bodybuilding). Ever the showman, along with his lifelong coach Leo Stern, Pearl would wear a fake mustache, leotards, a fig leaf, and a late-1800s backdrop, all for providing the exact effect of the Sandow era. As if that wasn't enough, Pearl was equally as famous for performing his strongman routine, which included tearing of license plates, bending penny spike nails, and blowing up a hot water bottle.

He is the author of the popular exercise book, Getting Stronger: Weight Training for Men and Women, which has sold over 350,000 copies in the United States and has been translated into four other languages, including Chinese. His book Keys To The INNER Universe, is still to this day considered to be a "must read" for bodybuilders. It contains 1,500 weight-training exercises and weighs five pounds. It is used extensively by professional athletes, trainers and serious bodybuilders and has sold over 60,000 copies.

Pearl had his own monthly question-and-answer column called "Pearl of the Universe" in the bodybuilding magazine MuscleMag International as well as one in Muscle Builder (later Muscle & Fitness) magazine, entitled "Wisdom of Pearl" in the 1970s & 1980s. In 2003 with coauthor Kim Shott, Pearl published his autobiography, Beyond the Universe: The Bill Pearl Story.

Pearl became a vegetarian at age 39 and is the best-known vegetarian bodybuilder. Bill's diet is lacto-ovo vegetarian, which means he eats eggs and dairy products.

During the 1980s, Pearl served as a mentor, trainer, and training partner to many of the top professionals that were still competing. One such individual was Mr. Olympia, Chris Dickerson.

Pearl is 5' 9" tall. He currently lives in Phoenix, Oregon.

Steve michalik

Steve Michalik is a bodybuilder most active during the 1970s and 80's. He won a number of titles including the 1971 AAU Mr. USA, the Mr. America in 1972 and the NABBA Mr. Universe in 1975 as well as 22 other titles including the 1971 AAU Mr. Apollo and the Most Muscular Man in the USA.

Shortly after the 1975 Mr Universe, Steve was involved in a serious car accident which left him paralyzed from the waist down and relegated to a wheel chair for 3 years.

At the 1980 IFBB Miami Grand Prix event, Steve made his now famous comeback to the stage, where television commentator Arnold Schwarzenegger introduced Steve as the Phantom Bodybuilder. Placing 4th in the event qualified him for the newly formed Grand Prix tour.

According to an interview with Michalik, he has suffered many serious health problems due to his steroid use. It started with him passing blood in his urine; a sign of the multiple liver tumors doctors later discovered. After recovering from these, he suffered a heart attack, followed by a stroke. Since then, he has been against the use of steroids.

EARLY LIFE

Initially a high school and later a college baseball star, Troy always had a love for weight training that dated back to his sophomore year of high school. While on a full scholarship at an Arizona community college for baseball, Alves injured himself while weight training. His career in baseball was seriously jeopardized, prompting Alves to quit college and join the United States Airforce. Having a child at the time was one of the major reasons for doing so. After being told he should pursue bodybuilding, Alves broke into his first show in 1996 when he competed in the NPC (National Physique Committee) USA Championships, where he placed 8th. His first IFBB competition was the Arnold Classic of 2003, where he placed 10th. His first Mr. Olympia came in 2004, where he placed 15th. Alves is known for his balanced body. He has been featured in many fitness articles and has appeared on the cover of FLEX magazine. Today he lives in Peoria, Arizona, USA where he owns his own supplement store Pro Nutrition. He is a childhood friend of actor Michael Jai White. Troy will be competing on February 20, 2010 at the 1st Arizona IFBB Pro Bodybuilding Show in Mesa, Arizona The Phoenix Pro

NUTS FOR BODY BUILDING

A nut in cuisine is a much less restrictive category than a nut in botany, as the term is applied to many seeds that are not botanically true nuts. Any large, oily kernel found within a shell and used in food may be regarded as a nut.

Because nuts generally have a high oil content, they are a highly prized food and energy source. A large number of seeds are edible by humans and used in cooking, eaten raw, sprouted, or roasted as a snack food, or pressed for oil that is used in cookery and cosmetics. Nuts (or seeds generally) are also a significant source of nutrition for wildlife. This is particularly true in temperate climates where animals such as jays and squirrels store acorns and other nuts during the autumn to keep them from starving during the late autumn, all of winter, and early spring.

Nuts used for food, whether true nut or not, are among the most common food allergens.

Some fruits and seeds that do not meet the botanical definition but are nuts in the culinary sense:

* Almonds, Pecans and Walnuts are the edible seeds of drupe fruits — the leathery "flesh" is removed at harvest.

* Brazil nut is the seed from a capsule.

* Candlenut (used for oil) is a seed.

* Cashew nut is a seed.

* Gevuinanut

* Horse-chestnut is an inedible capsule.

* Macadamia nut is a creamy white kernel (Macadamia integrifolia).

* Malabar chestnut

* Mongongo

* Peanut is a legume.

* Pine nut is the seed of several species of pine (coniferous trees).

* Pistachio nut is the seed of a thin-shelled drupe.

Nutritional benefits

A nut is a hard-shelled fruit of some plants having an indehiscent seed. While a wide variety of dried seeds and fruits are called nuts in English, only a certain number of them are considered by biologists to be true nuts. Nuts are an important source of nutrients for both humans and wildlife.

Nuts are a composite of the seed and the fruit, where the fruit does not open to release the seed. Most seeds come from fruits, and the seeds are free of the fruit, unlike nuts like hazelnuts, hickories, chestnuts and acorns, which have a stony fruit wall and originate from a compound ovary. Culinary usage of the term is less restrictive, and some nuts as defined in food preparation, like pistachios and Brazil nuts,are not nuts in a biological sense. Everyday common usage of the term often refers to any hard walled, edible kernel, as a nut.

Roland Kickinger
