Serge Nubret

Serge Nubret (October 6, 1938 – April 19, 2011) was a French professional bodybuilder, bodybuilding federation leader, movie actor and author. Serge was awarded many bodybuilding titles, including Mr. Europe (1966), Mr. Universe (1976) and WBBG Pro. Mr. World (1977). Serge Nubret's nicknames were "The Black Panther" and "The Nubret Lion."

BIOGRAPHY

Serge Nubret spent his first years in Anse-Bertrand, Guadeloupe, in a community of 7,000 people. He moved with his parents to the Paris, France area in 1950, settling in the community of Joinville-le-Pont, and completing his secondary studies before choosing a business program.
During his adolescence and young adulthood, he quickly became aware of his exceptional potential for athletics and recalls this reflection in his book I Am…Me and God; in his own words, dedicating himself to bodybuilding was to become his "reason for being." He explains in his book his destiny of a fixed champion assigned to him by God ["I Am"]. He returned in Guadeloupe in 1958 in order to escape the draft for the Algerian War. It was during this period of his life he discovered bodybuilding, which he practiced simultaneously while pursuing business accounting. Bodybuilding was not encouraged by his father at the time who was concerned that it did not have as much potential for financial income as an accounting career.
Three months after entering the world of bodybuilding, Serge won the title of Mr. Guadeloupe, which he won again the following year. He was sent in 1960 to Montreal to show the flag of Guadeloupe in support for his country at the time of the World Championship organized by the International Federation of Bodybuilders. It was there Nubret was named "Most Muscular Man of the World." Returning next to Paris without going to Guadeloupe, he was contacted by the Films Ariane for a role alongside Giuliano Gemma in a Duccio Tessari Italian péplum film called "The Titans" which was released in 1961 and was prelude to a rich career of 25 films.
Nubret is best known in the bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron where he competed as a last-minute entry against (eventual seven time winner) Arnold Schwarzenegger for the title of Mr. Olympia in 1975. While he looked fantastic, Serge finished second in the Tall Man category to Schwarzenegger, while Lou Ferrigno finished third. He was known for his excellent chest development, which would scare off fellow contestants.
The documentary film Pumping Iron, alongside Lou Ferrigno and Arnold Schwarzenegger, follows the events occurring before the Mr. Olympia 1975—the preparation for the competition as well as its final phase. For contract reasons, his part is comparatively brief; and, apparently, certain scenes containing him could not be put in the movie. These episodes are discussed further in his book, I am…Me and God.
In the 1980s, Serge appeared regularly in 60 episodes of the television series Breakfast Included, with Pierre Mondy and Marie-Christine Barrault, in which he played a role that mirrored his real life as a bodybuilder/gym owner in Paris.
During the 1970s, Nubret finished third in the 1973 Mr. Olympia and second in 1975. Vice President of the IFBB Europe from 1970-1975, Nubret then founded the WABBA in 1976. He competed until 1984, when he won his last title of WABBA Champion of the World. In Gravelines in 2003, Nubret guest-posed at the WABBA World Championship at the impressive age of 65.
In 2006, 68-year-old Serge Nubret penned the book I am…Me and God in collaboration with Louis-Xavier Babin-Lachaud. The book is not only autobiographical in nature, but it also includes his personal reflections on his Christian faith and mysticism. Through his life narrative, it adopts a definite position on the role of God in this world, on the conflict between destiny and free will, and on the illusion of this world. The book indicates the will to succeed and to follow the way traced by God, love of the author's "reason for being"..

Illness and Death

A second work is a 400+ page autobiography entitled Seventy Years Young. At the time of release (April 2009), it was learned that Serge Nubret suffered a stroke in Paris, France. There are conspiracies circling around the internet, which have been supported by Serge's old friends, that he was poisoned by his own children in an attempt to take his money.

In March of 2009, Nubret fell into a coma, and remained in a persistent vegetative state until his death on 19 April 2011 of natural causes at the age of 72.

Bertil Fox

Bertil Fox (born November 9, 1951) on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Kitts is a British former IFBB professional bodybuilder. Fox immigrated to London, England, with his family when he was only one year old. He then moved to Northampton. He did not return to St. Kitts for more than 40 years. He once said, "I'm 100% British. I think, I act and talk like an Englishman, not like someone from the West Indies."

Encouraged by a cousin to take up bodybuilding, Fox won the 1969 Junior Mr. Britain at 18. He went on to win nearly every major bodybuilding contest outside of the IFBB, including the 1976 AAU Mr. World, the amateur 1977 NABBA Mr. Universe and the professional NABBA Mr. Universe in 1978 and 1979. Joe Weider sponsored Fox's move to Los Angeles in 1981, and he competed in IFBB contests for the next 13 years. The late Bill Reynolds, then FLEX Magazine editor-in-chief, gave Fox the nickname "Brutal" for his high-volume and extremely heavy training.

The 5'8" 230-pound Fox lacked back width and thigh sweep, but the colossal chest, delts, traps and arms he sported more than 20 years ago would hold up on any-stage today. He was touted as a future Mr. Olympia, and there's no telling what he may have accomplished had he joined the IFBB five years earlier.
Fox placed second in two IFBB shows - the 1982 Night Of Champions and the 1983 Swiss Grand Prix (beating Lee Haney) and he finished fifth in the 1983 Mr. Olympia (his second of five Mr. O appearances) but by the mid-1980s he was past his prime. He competed in 12 IFBB shows from 1984 to 1994, but he was typically too smooth to make an impact.

Retiring from the stage, he returned to St. Kitts to open Fox's Gym.

Paul Dillett, interviewed by Ron Avidan.

So, are you racist?

Oh my god! Hell, no! I guess it is hard to be a racist when you are bi-racial. I am half black, half white. My dad is white, and my mom is black. So it is kind of hard to be a racist. I have had two wives, both of whom were white, one was German, the other was Canadian. The girl I date is white so I don't know. The only people who say that I am a racist is actually a true racist. Just because someone has an opinion does not make them a racist. Just because someone says they feel there is some racism in the sport that he is involved in does not make them a racist.

Your dad was white, and mom was black? What are you?

That makes me a Mulatto. My dad was from France, and my mom was Jamaican, and I was born in Canada. My dad passed away.

Was it strange growing up in your family?

No, because in my family, there is no such thing as racism. My mom accepts people for who they are, not for the color of their skin or anything else. That is the way I was brought up. I treat you the way you treat me. I don't care if you are white, black, Chinese or whatever the hell you are. If you are a good person, you are a good person. If you are an asshole, you are an asshole. I judge people as individuals, based on the character and how they treat me, not by the color of their skin. There are a lot of black guys and white guys who are assholes.

Growing up, my favorite bodybuilder was Lou Ferrigno. Also, Gary Strydom. I could not wait to meet Gary Strydom. I idolized the guy. I love his delts. The reason my delts are the way there are is because I have always wanted to have delts like Gary Strydom. Also, who doesn't love Tom Platz.

Should the IFBB suspend you for your comments in your column?

Should they suspend me? For having my own opinion? You can't suspend someone for having their own opinion? It is my opinion! It doesn't mean that it is right, and it doesn't mean that it is wrong. These are my feelings, you know what I mean? You can't suspend someone for having an opinion? This is America right, freedom of speech. You should have a right to your own opinion. That is a part of life. I did not attack any one individual! If someone wants to say that it makes me a racist, then go right ahead. Call me a racist, because I am always going to speak my mind. I have always been known as one of the most outspoken bodybuilders out there along with Shawn Ray. We say how we feel. Most people feel a certain way, but they just don't say it. They are afraid to say it. Some of us like Shawn, myself and other individuals are not afraid to just come out and say 'This is how I feel'. I am entitled to that. Some people love Paul Dillett, some people don't. That's their opinion, that is their choice. They have that right to feel that way.

Why do you think the IFBB is racist?

Wait, I said that there is racism within the IFBB. You can't say the IFBB is racist because the IFBB is made up of a big group of individuals. Look, when you check out the judging panels, how many black people do you see on it? How many black athletes do you see on stage? My whole thing is that you can't not address that point. You can't deny that simple fact that there are lots of black competitors and only two black judges? My whole question that was asked of me was that 'Do you believe there is racism in the IFBB', and I replied 'Yes'. I am definitely not hear to bash the IFBB.

What would you say if the question was asked to you? You most likely will say no because you are not involved directly like the judges and the athletes are involved, on a more personal level. You tend to view things differently.

Well, how about you becoming an IFBB judge?

Me. No, I am not interested in becoming a judge right now. You know, there should not be such an uproar just because an athlete says 'I feel this way'. Maybe the IFBB should contact the athlete, and say 'If something happens that made you feel this way, then let's get down to the bottom of it'.

Do you know any athletes who want to become an IFBB judge?

You know, I have never really given it any thought as to which athletes wants to become a judge. But look, for how many years has Shawn Ray been bitching and complaining about the judging system. A lot of the black athletes say stuff, but they will not go on record to say anything. Hey, you know me, I speak my mind. I don't care what the repercussions are going to be. If I do my job right, if I come out on stage looking the best that I can, let the chips fall where they may. Sometimes you have to speak out for the good of others.

Some judges are offended at your MD article. Which judge was the racist one?

If it offends them, that is their problem. Then they need to sit back and think about what they said, or who said what? I don't really care if they are offended by that. I am sorry. I am not going to say who the judge was because I don't want any repercussions on that individual. But believe me, they know exactly who they are. You think that the judge was the first one to make a racist remark. Come on. I am not going to back down from this. What makes me mad is people are going to tell me that I offend them. Well, perhaps you have done things that have offended me in the past. That's life. If you don't like it, that is too bad.

There are a lot of great judges out there. Ken Taylor, Sandy Ranalli, Debbie Elwoods. People who I know are very good judges. Incredible judges. In every bunch, there is a rotten apple, and they know it. And that is the whole bottom line.

Look, there is nothing that I say that most of us don't already know. Whether people want to admit it or not, I have heard all of these things before. If I am one of the first athletes to bring this to the forefront, and everybody now is in an uproar that Paul says bodybuilding is racist, that's too bad.

Let met ask you a question? How many white guys have told me 'Oh, I have a black friend.' Wow, that's cool. How would they feel if I asked them 'How would you feel if I wanted to date your sister?' Am I your friend? Really? If I am your friend, then you would let me date your sister. All of a sudden, it is not too cool then. It's ok for you and me to be friends as long as I don't date your sister, and I am not in your family.

Have you spoken to IFBB Vice President Wayne DeMilia about how you feel about these issues?

No, I have not spoken to Wayne as of yet on this. Wayne has not called me. Wayne knows my number, he can call me anytime. I absolutely do not have a problem with Wayne.

Is it not different in 2003 than it was 10 years ago?

No, it's bullshit. This thing is still the same. People who believe that it is different have their head up there ass. Nothing has changed. Still the same bullshit. Talk to other black athletes. Chris Cormier, Dexter Jackson, Flex Wheeler. I am telling you 'They will say nothing has changed'. Changed for who? Usually, the black athletes do not get the big contracts in bodybuilding. Oh yeah, you can say that Paul always seems to land the big deals. But that is because I don't accept any limitations on myself, and I believe that you are worth what you think you are worth.

First Bodybuilding Contest: The 1986 Sydney Bodybuilding Classic

Major Wins: I won the Mr. Australia three times - 1989, '90 and '91.

Highlight of Career: Placing sixth at the 1997 Olympia at the tender age of 25.

Biggest Disappointment of Career: Having to cut out KFC at contest time. As to having my placing changed at the 1997 Mr. O, I don't worry about that stuff, shit happens.

Role Models in Bodybuilding: Dorian Yates, Paul Dillett, and Nasser El Sonbaty, I have a lot for the guys with the freakier physiques and that's what I want to emulate.

Bodybuilders Whose Personalites You Most Admire: Paul Dillett, Mike Matarazzo, Tom Platz.

Least-favourite Exercise: All of them.

Favourite Exercise: I don't have any.

Long-Term Personal Ambition: To live long enough to see a bodybuilding show judged correctly.

Long-Term Bodybuilding Ambition: To do the best I can and to get progressively bigger.

Best Bodypart: My Heart.

Worst: My whole body; that's why I keep training hard to improve.

What You Would Be If Not A Bodybuilder: A mortician. It's steady work, especially in Los Angeles.

Possession You Prize Above All Others: My life.

Idea of a Perfect Vacation: Going to any place with no gym or junk food.

Favourite Car: BMW 850i - the car I drive. Hummers and Lamborghinis are not bad at all.

Favourite Binge-Out Treat: KFC, Chinese Food and Ice-Cream bars.

Favourite Food: Junk Food!

Favourite Musician:I like love songs and ballads. Celine Dion is a good example of a singer who I enjoy listening too.

Favourite Book: Whatever is sitting beside the toilet when I visit.

Favourite City: Metropolis

Favourite Comedian: Adam Sandler is pretty funny. I like comedians who are rude and disgusting.

Favourite TV Programmes: Days of Our Lives and any TV talk show.

Trait you Admire in Yourself: My sense of humour.

Traits you Admire in Others: Honesty, and a good sense of humour.

Lee Priest has been hit with an IFBB fine of nearly $12,000 in response to his withdrawal from the Arnold Classic and comments elsewhere that a bodybuilder has to "sleep with officials" to do well in contests. Agree? Until the fine is paid, the 1998 Mr. 0 Seventh Place finisher will not be allowed to compete in IFBB contests.
